This article shows you what to do when your personal web page or virtual domain says that it is Forbidden

Why is my web site "Forbidden"

Problem: You are attempting to look at your personal web page or virtual domain and you see a screen stating that access to this page is "Forbidden"

Example of Forbidden Page

Are you attempting to look at your web page or virtual domain for the first time? If the answer is yes, then read solution 1. If your personal web page or domain was visible in the past, then please read solution 2.

Solution 1: Your web space needs to be "activated"

Whenever FrogNet creates a new dialup, ADSL or Webhosting account we must first create a directory on our web server where you can store the files that comprise your web pages. By default, this directory is "Forbidden" to web browsers. This is done for security reasons. Many web authors do not want people to have access to a site untill all the pages have been uploaded to the server and security measures have been put in a place. That is why we leave it up to you to activate your own account.

If you want your web page to become "un-forbidden" or "active", then you need to do the following.

  1. Connect to the Internet as you normally do.
  2. Open a telnet window and connect to shell.frognet.net using your login and password. If you have questions about how to telnet, read below, or read our FrogNet Telnet Tutorial.
    • Windows Users can open a telnet window by clicking the start menu -> run -> and then type in...
      telnet shell.frognet.net
and then click the OK button
    • Mac users do not have a built in Telnet client. They need to download one of the many free ones available to them, or use FrogNet's Java based telnet page located here
  3. In your Telnet session, type in the following command at the command prompt...
    chmod 755 ~yourusername
make sure you don't forget the ~ and also make sure to substitute your real frognet login for yourusername
  4. That should activate your account.

If your account is still Forbidden, or you couldn't log in via Telnet, then your account may be suspended for financial reasons. Read Solution 2.

Solution 2: Your account was Suspended

If your page was visible in the past, and has suddenly become "Forbidden" your account may have been suspended.

FrogNet suspends accounts upon request, when the Terms of Service are violated, or when an account is past due. Call FrogNet to pay your bill via credit card, or check your email (or invoice) for your last bill. You can also pay your bill online.
