This document provides information on how to transfer your domain away from FrogNet to another ISP or hosting service. There are several important things you need to know to make the transition as smooth as possible.
DOWNTIME: There will ALWAYS be downtime whenever you transfer a domain. ALWAYS. Because of the way DNS works, there is absolutely no way to avoid at least a couple hours of downtime. In some cases it can even be days. Downtime also varies on the geographic location of a visitor to your website. People closer to the epicenter will experience very little downtime while people on the other side of the world might have to wait a day or two before the correct DNS information propagates to their root servers and local DNS servers.
APPROVING THE MOVE: FrogNet will not, under any circumstances, approve any e-mail or phone call requests to transfer a domain AWAY from our servers TO another server. This seem harsh, but we are definitely not trying to hijack your domain. We are doing this for your own protection. There have been countless cases reported where hackers use social engineering (manipulation of people) to hijack a domain name. Why try to hack into a computer when you can just trick the hosting company into doing your dirty work for you? We've experienced cases where recently divorced spouses both try to claim a domain name, or an ex-company employee tries to take the domain name with him for malicious reasons. For these reasons, we will not approve the transfer even if you are standing in front of us with a valid picture ID. It is your responsibility or the responsibility of your new ISP to move the domain. That way, if someone needs to investigate the domain transfer, any paper trails or server logs will point to YOU and not to US.
NOTIFY US AFTER YOU LEAVE: Be sure to notify us of your move. When you notify us, we will monitor your domain's DNS servers. Once they are no longer pointing to FrogNet, we will delete the domain within a few business days.
If you do not, a ghost copy of your domain will remain on our servers. People trying to e-mail you or visit your site may be redirected to the old site. You WILL lose traffic and email.
We do occasionally perform an audit to remove dead and transferred domains, but you could be losing out on thousands of hits in the mean time. So it is vital that you don't forget to tell us about your move. Send notification of the move to domains@frognet.net. Be sure to include your old FrogNet login and the name of your domain.
Steps to a smooth transfer
1) Purchase an account with another ISP or hosting company
2) FTP all the files that comprise your site FROM your account on FrogNet TO your home computer.
3) FTP all the files TO your new hosting account FROM your home computer TO your new host.
4) Visit your domain registrar's website and change the Technical Contact information and DNS servers so that they point to your new host. You new host should have that information available for you. This is absolutely vital!
5) Notify FrogNet that you have left. DON'T FORGET THIS STEP!!!! If you forget to notify us WE WILL CONTINUE TO HOST YOUR SITE UNTIL OUR NEXT DOMAIN AUDIT!!!!! It is your responsibility to notify us of a move. Unfortunately, at this point we still cannot read our customer's minds. The mindreader 3000 is still in the works last we heard :-)
