I am a retired 5th grade teacher from the Athens City Schools at East Elementary in Athens, Ohio. I am an amateur herpetologist; that's a person who studies reptiles and amphibians. In the picture above I am holding my Bearded Dragons. (Click the picture to enlarge it.) In addition to collecting snakes, I raise Iguanas, various lizards, and other herps, many of which I kept in my classroom.  They have now retired from classroom duty except when on loan. I used to do Reptile shows for area schools and Scout groups, and I am not longer able to exhibit Ohio animals due to new Ohio Wildlife Laws. My classroom was always rather interesting; I have had waterfalls and small ponds which housed our pet turtles; in the Spring I set up a 5 ft. by 6 ft. pond which the students stocked with salamanders, newts, tadpoles, frogs, crayfish, dragonfly larvae, fish, turtles. Once they even brought in a giant leech and a watersnake for the pond. I did much cooperative learning, often integrating reading and language with social studies or science. The last few years I did lots of work with a fantastic program called HyperStudio. The students made wonderful research projects with HyperStudio and did evening presentations for all the parents.

I was involved with the Ohio SchoolNet LessonLab Program and have designed a unit plan for Black History Studies and co-designed a unit on the theme Ice Cream. As part of my Masters work, I completed a research paper entitled "Internet Use in K-12 Schools"

I am a parent of six children, 3 by birth and 3 by adoption. I am a member of the Southeastern Ohio Adoptive Family Support Group and I have been a group leader for post adoption groups for children and adults. My wife Bonnie is a adoption case worker Supervisor for Athens County Childrens Services. She used to help coordinate the Ohio Statewide Adoption Retreat which we attended every year at Deecreek State Park for 14 years until Governor Taft in his infinite wisdom cut the funding.  As a member of the Rome Township Volunteer Fire Department, I do fire inspections for adoptive and foster family certifications and am webmaster.

My wife and I are active in our church; She is a lay leader and former PPR chair and I am Technology Coordinator and past Administrative Council chair. My daughter Erin and her husband Mike are youth group leaders. In February 2006, I had the pleasure of organizing a Nicaragua Mission Trip for our church including the youth group. Attending were Erin, Mike, our pastor, four other adults and I, as well as seven young men and women from our youth group. We hope to repeat this mission trip in 2008.

My interests include camping, hiking, swimming, herpetology, carpentry and woodworking (I built an addition on our home and am currently working on another small addition and bathroom remodeling project ), and most recently computers. I refer to myself as a budding technologist. I've got a long way to go, but I'm having a great time learning! I was webmaster and a tech coordinator for my school and am currently webmaster for Rome Township Volunteer Fire Department, The Canaanville United Methodist Church and have done some web work for the Maple Heights Class of 1965. I am starting a web page development company called Computer Cyber Services. My wife, Bonnie, has been happier since I gave up raising goats and sheep. She's still hoping I'll loose interest in snakes!

I love attending the All-Ohio Reptile Swap whenever I can. A Reptile Swap is an event where an entrepreneurial snake owner rents an exhibition hall and invites hundreds of other snake-lovers to come and sell their pets and supplies. Then thousands of snake-lovers like myself come to see what all is for sale and spend our hard earned money on things like, snakes, bearded dragons, chameleons, iguanas, turtles, poison dart frogs, alligators, tarantulas, scorpions, sugar gliders, parrots and other exotic pets and also food items like rats, mice, rabbits, beetles, meal worms, etc.

My most recent schedule addition has been to volunteer for the Athens County Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
