State Code: MO
State Nickname: The Show-Me State
Capital: Jefferson City
Origin of Capital Name: After Thomas Jefferson, Third US President
Area:
Population:

About the state: Missouri is a midwestern state, bordered on the east by the Mississippi River, while the Missouri River, which flows west-east through the middle of the state, forms the northern half of the western boundary. North of the Missouri River, the state is principally prairie converted to farmland with remnant woodlands and gently rolling hills. South of the river, there are ancient igneous mountains to the east, prairie in the center and west, and the hills of the Ozarks in the south. The state largely overlays thick strata of limestone, with many caves and man-made lakes in the southern half.

Montana

Origin of Name: Latin (perversely, from the Spanish) for "mountains" or "place of mountains"; a name deliberately selected by one J. M. Ashley
State Code: MT
State Nickname: The Treasure State
Capital: Helena
Origin of Capital Name:

About the state: Montana is named for its mountains, but much of the state is high plains, as well. Scattered mountain ranges in the center develop into more mountainous areas in the west. The western border of the state is largely on the continental divide, and is somewhat west of where it was supposed to have been due to a surveying error.
