This is an outline of the world's political divisions, organized by 1) continent; 2) area of continent if relevant; 3) nation; 4) national subdivision (province, state, department); 5) further subdivisions if they exist.
There are three major aggregations of land mass on Earth. One is the Americas, also called the Western Hemisphere, and including the West Indies. The other is the Eastern Hemisphere, sometimes (in part) called the Old World, and including Eurasia, Africa, and the East Indies. The third is Antarctica.
Most of the Earth's surface is covered in ocean. The Pacific Ocean is by far the largest, occupying over one-third of the entire surface of the Earth. The Atlantic Ocean is second largest, although it may easily be considered as two almost separate oceans, the North Atlantic and the South Atlantic.
The highest mountainous area in the world is that of south-central Asia, including the mountain ranges that ring the Indian subcontinent. The second-highest mountainous area is that of the South American Andes range. The third-highest are to be found in the Rocky Mountains of western North America. The fourth-highest are the Alps in Europe.
The world's largest/longest rivers are to be found in North America, South America, and Africa.
