Wood Co. Nancy is daughter of John Gilliland (mother not known); George and Nancy buried George S. Lemon Cemetery, Cisco, Ritchie Co., W.Va. “This distinguished pioneer died at Hockingport, Wood County, in December, 1865, and sleeps at Cisco, this county. His venerable companion was laid by his side in 1872 .” (may be spelled Gilleland).
The marriage bond of George and Nancy appears in Marriage Bond Book, page 178, Botetourt County courthouse, Virginia. When George died they were living on land situated at the mouth of Big Hocking River, Wood County, W. Va. Miss. Lowther states in her history of Ritchie Co. that George died at home at Hockingport. Today, Hockingport is in Ohio, directly across the river from Harris Ferry, Wood County W.Va. She was obviously referring to the property he purchased at the mouth of the Big Hocking River in Wood County when he sold the property at Cisco.

The early home site of George S. and Nancy Lemon at Cisko was sold to H.L. Jackson of the County of Mason of the State of West Virginia … dated 18 September 1865 for
“fifteen thousand dollars in hand”…containing one hundred four acres (Dyers 162; 1850)…. excepting however plot “reserved for a graveyard and no other use where Elisha and Jacob Lemmon is buried.” There were two tracts of land sold in this deed. John P. and Ellen Lemon also received “four hundred dollars in hand” for two hundred acres between Bear run and the South Fork of Hughes River (RC Survey Book 1, page 113). The deed was between H.L. Jackson and the following; “George S. & Nancy Lemmon, G.H. Lemmon and Albert S. Lemmon all of Ritchie County and John P. and Ellen Lemmon of Mason County.
George then purchased 54.5 acres in 1865 from George Smith and wife, “lying on the Ohio River opposite mouth of Big Hocking River on north side of said river” in county of Wood. This land was also later purchased from the estate by H.L. Jackson after the death of Nancy Gilliland Lemon.
George applied on 12 April 1855 for a land grant due him for his service in the War of 1812. This was turned down at one time. Some descendants were told by their early family members that he did receive this grant, but documentation does not exist to substantiate the claim. Nancy applied for a widow’s pension which was received by the War Department Pension Office 23 August 1871 and rejected 22 May 1872. On 5 May 1883 the Pension Office approved her claim for the pension. They were ten years too late, she had died in 1872.
