The Southeast Ohio Radio Adventure Team is a small group of Southeast Ohio hams who enjoy operating their radios outdoors and when away from home.
Meet the SEORATs:
K8RAT
K8RAT

Mike Hansgen, K8RAT (formerly AA8EB), has moved away from the southeast Ohio area but still participates in SEORAT field junkets as his schedule permits. Mike is a fan of directional field-portable antennas and has built a 330' vee-beam for field use. His current project is to develop a 20m Moxon Rectangle and mast for field use.

Mike has many HF rigs, including a 10-watt Elecraft K2; a Yaesu FT-920 and FT-102; an ICOM IC-735; a Ten-Tec Argonaut 515, Scout, Omni D, and Corsair II; and a Heathkit HW-8 (with RIT and 10 meters in place of 80 meters) and HW-9. Yes--Mike has taken his contest-grade FT-920 to SEORAT field operations!

John McCutcheon, N8XWO, often travels with his tent-camper and greatly enjoys combining these trips with amateur radio. Within the team, John is the guru on VHF operations.

John has numerous rigs, both for HF and for VHF multi-mode, including an ICOM IC-706MkIIG for portable use.

W8MHV / 9M2MC

Drew McDaniel, W8MHV/9M2MC, might be considered the "spiritual leader" of the team. Drew regularly travels internationally for his employer and usually makes ham radio an important part of his travels.

Drew has far too many rigs to list, but in his stable of rigs can be found an Index Labs Improved QRP Plus; an Elecraft K1, KX1, and 10-watt K2; a Yaesu FT-817; an ICOM IC-781 and IC-7000; a Ten-Tec Argonaut 515, Argonaut II, Argonaut V, and Orion II; and several homebrew rigs. Drew is also a fan of vintage equipment and has an impressive collection of "heavy metal".

Eric McFadden, WD8RIF, somehow ends up doing much of the logistical work leading up to SEORAT junkets.

Eric's collection of HF rigs includes a 10-watt Elecraft K2, a Ten-Tec Argonaut 509; a Heathkit HW-7, HW-8, HW-9, and HW-16; and an ICOM IC-735. Eric's favorite field rig is his Elecraft K2 which is the heart of his K2 Travel Kit. Eric has been experimenting with easy-to-deploy field-portable antennas.

Tom Witherspoon, KF4TZK (formerly KC8GLI and M0CYI), has left the southeast Ohio area for western North Carolina (by way of Germany and England) but still participates in SEORAT events as he is able.

Tom has a Ten-Tec Omni VI Plus, an ICOM IC-735, a four-band Elecraft KX1 and 10-watt K2. Tom is experimenting with field antennas using a 31' Jackite telescoping fiberlass pole.
